As mentioned previously, Michael and I met in person for the first time in a Kohl’s parking lot. It made sense since Johnson Creek is halfway between Milwaukee and Madison. What I didn’t tell you is that I was not interested in dating. Period.
2007 was the year of my “dating moratorium.” I just wasn’t gonna do it. Of course, as soon as I told myself this, everyone had a blind date for me. When Michael’s first email popped into my inbox, this was really my state of mind. In the midst of our emails back and forth, I felt it was important to let him know that I wasn’t looking for anything beyond friendship. I tried to make my feelings clear so we both drove into that parking lot with the same expectations. I had no idea that things were about to dramatically change…

I don’t recall exactly where in our conversation it happened or even what we were talking about, but at the Two Loons Cafe there was a “capital M” Moment where we went from friendship to something more. Something Michael said caused me to lean over and touch his forearm. As I said, I have no clue what we were talking about, but I can tell you what I was thinking: “hey! I touched his arm– what does that mean?!? I’m not sure I meant to do that!” Michael would tell you he remembers the exact same moment. His reaction was more along the lines of “I knew it.”
After we had known each other for a while, we had a conversation about that exact Moment. And we both remember it clearly along with how we felt. I love that Michael has told me that he knew all along it was simply a matter of time. In spite of my claims that I wasn’t looking to date anyone, he believed that we would be more than friends. It simply took me longer to realize it. We told this story to Pastor Bill (who will be performing our ceremony), and I think he summed it up best in a few succinct words: my heart knew before my mind did.
